Tips To Make Your Tires Last
Your vehicle's tires will not last forever, but you can still extend their lifespan if you make sure to follow some simple recommendations. Here are some tips that will help you get the most out of your tires.
Check the Air Pressure Every Month
The easiest way to extend a tire's life is to maintain the correct air pressure. The correct air pressure can vary based on your vehicle’s weight, size, and other factors, but you usually want to keep the pressure between 32 and 35 psi for most passenger cars. Your tires' air pressure will naturally decrease as the weather gets colder so check your tires' pressure every month.
Rotate Your Tires Every 5,000 Miles
Whether your vehicle is front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, two wheels generally do the bulk of the work. This causes the tires to wear unevenly. Rotating your tires every 5,000 miles will help keep the wear on your tires as even as possible, which will give you a smoother ride, improve gas mileage, and ultimately lead to longer-lasting tires.
Have Your Wheels Balanced
When you have your tires rotated, take the time to have them balanced as well. No tire or wheel is perfect; there will always be heavier spots that cause your tires to wear unevenly. Your mechanic can compensate for these imperfections by balancing your tires with a special machine and small weights. Keep in mind, that your tires will need to be re-balanced as they wear down.
Check Your Alignment Twice a Year
A vehicle's wheels can easily go out of alignment without you knowing it. These small shifts in alignment might not be noticeable right away, but they will affect your vehicle's performance if it isn't corrected. You might notice that your car drifts slowly to one side or that you no longer get great gas mileage. Naturally, a shift in alignment can cause your tires to wear unevenly and shorten their lifespan. Your mechanic can adjust your car's alignment, so make sure to check your alignment at least twice a year to ensure that you keep rolling smoothly.
Store Your Tires Safely
If you drive a lot in harsh winter conditions, you probably have a special set of winter tires. Since you won't be needing these tires all year, they should be stored safely when they're not in use. Keep them in a place with a stable temperature where they won't be exposed to too much sunlight or ozone. Aside from that, they should be ready for you next winter as long as you keep them in a place where they won't be seriously damaged.
