Go for Quality (And Establish a Quality Relationship With Your Local Dealership)

Your relationship with your local dealer starts the second you walk onto the lot. They are there to help you and answer any questions that may arise about your new plow. But remember, the relationship does not end after you purchase your new snowplow! Your communication with the dealership will continue for as long as you have your plow, as they can assist you with maintenance queries, repairs, or parts knowledge. Keep up that communication for superior quality!

Where Are You Plowing and What’s Your Budget?

There’s a huge difference between snowplowing a small driveway and plowing a full street. Assess the area you will be plowing first. If you are just doing a few driveways, buying a 7 or 7.6 foot plow with a straight blade will be perfect! You will be looking at a range of $3,000-$5,000 for these.

However, if you are looking to get into a snowblowing business where you plow parking lots or rural driveways, you’ll need something a little more durable. Anything smaller than an 8’ would be a waste of time and money for you. Time is an essential factor with commercial plowing, so we highly recommend a V-plow. These V-plows will set you back around $6,000. Of course, this can change depending on size, so make sure you talk with your dealer!

Materials

Believe it or not, plows do have different materials. The most common are poly, mild steel, and stainless steel. All are great materials, but each one has different attributes that you should consider.

Poly

Poly plows allow for ease of snow removal. Snow will not stick to this material, and it will slide off easier and faster. This material is also resistant to scratches, corrosion, and dents! Many professional snow removers have switched to poly to ease their minds.

Mild Steel

This is the industry standard through-and-through. Mild steel has been the material of choice for manufacturers for years. Plows that are made of mild steel are treated with zinc powder to prevent rust, but eventually rust will occur.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is corrosion resistant and slicker than mild steel, making it a great choice. However, it is prone to dents and scratches. If you hit any rocks, small dents will appear on your plow. Over time, this could affect the overall performance of your plow.
